Information - Milk Thistle

What is milk thistle?

Milk thistle is one of the herbs used traditionally (over 2000 years) to protect the liver and bile.

In particular, the active substance of the herb, silymarin, seems to protect the liver from the action of toxins.

Properties and benefits

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Committee for Medicinal Products of Herbal Origin (HMPC) have approved the use of milk thistle as a traditional herbal aid for the symptomatic relief of:

  • digestive disorders,
  • fullness sensation (bloating),
  • indigestion and to support function of the liver.

In addition, studies prove that the active substance of milk thistle, silymarin, contributes to the detoxification of the liver. Specifically, it works by reducing the fatty infiltration of the liver (of non-alcoholic etiology). In fact, it seems to increase the levels of glutathione, one of the strongest endogenous antioxidant agents.

Dosage, forms and method of administration

No recommended daily dosage has been set. Milk thistle is considered safe and effective at doses of 420 mg/day.

You will find it in dietary supplements in:

  • capsules,
  • tablets,
  • tincture (in drops),
  • tea (beverage),

alone or in combination with vitamins and other detoxifying herbs (dandelion, artichoke).

Side effects, Interactions and Precautions for use

Taking milk thistle by people with severe liver problems and people suffering from diabetes should be done under medical supervision.

There are no studies on the safety of supplemental intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding and therefore it should be avoided.

It is recommended to be co-administered with caution with anticoagulants, contraceptives and cholesterol treatment.
