Information - Propolis

What is propolis?

Propolis is a bee product, a colloidal resinous substance collected by bees from certain plants and used to defend the hive.

It is a substance that provides natural antimicrobial action against viruses, bacteria and fungi and is rich in natural flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin), terpenes and phenolic compounds.

Propolis: Properties and benefits

Studies in recent decades prove its excellent beneficial properties for human health. Specifically:

  • Strengthens the immune system: It is used to relieve symptoms of the upper respiratory system (eg in cases of pharyngitis).
  • Provides antimicrobial protection: Shows significant activity against bacteria, fungi and viruses (e.g. herpes simplex virus).
  • Oral hygiene: Combating infection of the oropharyngeal cavity (gingivitis, aphthous stomatitis, periodontitis)
  • Skin health: Research shows that it inhibits the growth of P.acnes, which is the cause of acne. In addition, it improves wrinkles on the face of a mature skin.

In addition, it appears that:

  • improves cardiovascular function
  • supports the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract
  • provides strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action

In what forms do we find it?

How long can I take propolis?

No recommended daily intake (RDI) has been set for propolis. In any case, the dosage and the period of time of reception is determined either by the recommendation of the production company or by your needs, always with the advice of your health care provider.

Propolis for children

Of course, in the market you will find food supplements with propolis in gummies or sprays without alcohol, ideal for children.

Children's formulas with propolis and vitamins (Vitamin C, D) contribute to strengthening the children's immune system, preventing infections, basically, of the upper respiratory system.

Propolis: Side Effects, Precautions & Interactions

Supplemental propolis intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding is safe only with medical supervision.

It is recommended to avoid taking it by people allergic to pollen or bee products.

In case of an allergic reaction from topical application of propolis, itching, redness and swelling may be observed.

If you are taking anticoagulant treatment, we recommend that you consult your doctor before taking propolis.
