Information - Psyllium Husk

What is Psyllium Husk?

Psyllium belongs to the edible plant fibers that come from the seed of the Plantago ovate plant.

Properties

It absorbs many times its weight in water resulting in the creation of a "gel" in the intestine which improves mobility, increases the volume of stools and prevents and treats constipation. In addition, it can reduce the absorption of cholesterol and glucose, improving the lipid and glycemic profile.

Dosage

There is no recommended daily intake for psyllium. Carefully read the instructions for taking each product, as the dosage may vary depending on the composition.

Side effects, interactions and precautions for use

Psyllium should not be taken by people with gastrointestinal blockages. Diabetics and people with hypercholesterolemia should only take it under medical supervision. It also reduces the effect of aspirin, anticoagulant drugs, but also calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium. Do not take immediately before bedtime. There are no studies on its supplemental intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding and therefore it should be avoided.
