Information - Cranberry

What is Cranberry?

Cranberry is a fruit that belongs to the Vaccinium family, like blueberry and bilberry. It is rich in proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins (antioxidants), organic acids, vitamins, minerals and plant fibers.

You will find it in nutritional supplements in the following forms:

  • tablets
  • capsules
  • sachets (powder)
  • liquid form (juice)
  • chewable tablets

Βenefits

Cranberry is known for its strong antioxidant activity and of course for its ability to prevent lower urinary tract infections.

In particular, the proanthocyanidins (PACs) contained in cranberry create an acidic environment and prevent the attachment of pathogenic microorganisms to the epithelium of the bladder and urethra.

More generally, it is recommended for people who suffer from recurrent UTI.

Dosage

No recommended daily intake has been set for cranberry. However, studies show that the benefit of taking cranberry is provided when the concentration of proanthocyanidins is 36 mg or more/tablet per day.

Taking nutritional supplements with cranberry is recommended for about 2 months (as prevention).

Side effects, precautions for use and interactions

Cranberry should not replace medical treatment for urinary tract infections, as it is a complementary treatment. Furthermore, experts recommend that it not be taken at the same time as anticoagulants .

In addition, it should be avoided by people with chronic gastritis, kidney disease/nephrolithiasis. The safety of supplemental intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied and should therefore be avoided.
