Information - Biotin (Vitamin H)

What is biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin of the B complex, which is found in:

  • liver,
  • egg,
  • soy,
  • beans
  • and peanuts,

while in lesser content in

  • meat,
  • whole grains
  • and dairy products.

Benefits

Biotin contributes to normal energy metabolism in the body, the functioning of the:

  • nervous system,
  • the metabolism of macronutrients,
  • normal psychological function,
  • as well as the maintenance of healthy hair and skin.

What causes its deficiency?

Its deficiency can manifest itself during pregnancy, in people who consume large amounts of raw egg white (because it contains avidin that binds biotin), as well as in chronic parenteral feeding.

Biotin deficiency causes anorexia, nausea, dermatitis, glossitis, loss of taste and increases cholesterol in the blood.

The recommended daily intake for adults is 30 mcg.

Precautions for use/interactions:

Its consumption should be avoided by people with peptic ulcer.

Taking anti-epileptic drugs increases the need for biotin.

It is safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding with medical supervision.
