Information - Omega 3 - Krill oil - Fish Oil

What are Omega 3 fatty acids?

There are two types of fish oils: those that come from the liver of fish, such as cod, and those that come from their flesh.

All fish oils are rich in vitamin E and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids - especially EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (dosohexanoic acid). Cod liver oil is also rich in vitamin D and A.

Omega 3 fatty acids can be synthesized in the body from the α-linolenic acid of vegetable oils, eg linseed oil.

Krill Oil is a species of zooplankton - Euphasia Superba which is basically endemic to Antarctic waters.

Krill oil is rich in Vitamins E and A, while it also contains astaxanthin.

Health benefits

DHA and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) help to maintain:

  • Normal blood pressure
  • Normal blood triglyceride levels
  • In the normal functioning of the heart

In addition, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contributes to maintaining:

  • The normal functioning of the brain
  • Of normal vision

Also, studies support the action of Omega 3 fatty acids in fighting inflammation (arthritis).

Foods high in omega 3

In the flesh and liver of fish, but also in plant foods such as flaxseed.

Dosage

The recommended daily intake for healthy adults is 1100 mg of concentrated fish oil for women and 1600 mg for men.

Consider that 1000 mg of fish oil corresponds to about 300 mg of EPA and DHA.

Of course, depending on each need and health condition, the doses can be adjusted.

It is very often found in nutritional supplements in:

  • Liquid form (syrup)
  • Capsules
  • gummies (for children)

When to take them?

It is recommended to take it after a meal, for maximum absorption of nutrients.

Side effects, Interactions & Precautions for use

People with clotting disorders as well as people who take anticoagulant therapy should take fish oil under medical supervision.

Fish oils increase the need for vitamin E.

Cod liver oil and krill oil should be avoided in pregnancy due to their vitamin A content.
