Information - Green Tea

What is green tea?

Green tea comes from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Its difference from black tea lies both in its processing and in its content of flavonoids - the catechins - and antioxidants, which are in greater concentration here.

It contains among other ingredients caffeine and theophylline. The main catechin in green tea leaves is epigallocatechin (EGCG).

 Benefits

It is traditionally used to:

  • stimulate the body,
  • contributes to the reduction of fatigue
  • and especially to weight loss.

It is characterized as a powerful detoxifier and diuretic.

Still, there are studies that support its anti-diabetic effect as well as its effect in reducing blood pressure (mainly in overweight people).

Green tea is traditionally used to relieve symptoms of fatigue and weakness [Approval: Committee for Medicinal Products of Herbal Origin (HMPC)/European Medicines Agency (EMA)].

Dosage

There is no recommended daily intake for green tea. Most commonly, the recommended dosage is 100-700 mg of extract/day, after food. Of course, for larger doses, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist.

You will find it in nutritional supplements, either alone or in combination with other herbs (eg ginger) and vitamins. Studies recommend co-administration with Vitamin C, as it seems to increase the absorption of green tea catechins.

Side Effects, Contraindications & Interactions

Not to be taken by people with a history of bleeding or hemostatic disorders, as well as before surgery (stop using it at elast 2 weeks before surgery). Avoid taking at the same time as anticoagulant and antithrombotic treatment in general.

When taking green tea in the form of a dietary supplement, do not consume too much caffeine. Also, it is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In addition, people with cardiac problems, psychological disorders and stomach ulcers should inform their doctor before taking the preparation.
