What is sensitive skin?

The term sensitive skin is used to describe skin with reduced tolerance to cosmetics or personal care products. In surveys, about 50% of women and 40% of men may report having sensitive skin.

Dermatologists, when diagnosing this type of skin, pay attention to:

• Skin reactions such as blisters, skin bumps or skin erosion
• Dry skin
• Irritations or redness

Causes of sensitive skin

There are a number of scientifically recognized causes of sensitive skin, some of which are:

• Irritant contact dermatitis
• Allergic contact dermatitis
• Eczema / dermatitis of any kind
• Urticaria
• Rosacea
• Dry skin

What factors cause reactions in sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin can react to a variety of reactive agents. Factors include:

• Skin disorders or allergic reactions (eczema, rosacea, allergic dermatitis, etc.)
• Severely dry or injured skin, which does not have the ability to protect the nerve endings in the skin resulting in skin reactions
• Exposure to harmful environmental factors (sun, wind, extreme heat or cold)
• Genetic factors, as well as age and gender, can play a role in causing skin reactions.

What to avoid when you have sensitive skin?

• Hot showers or long baths
• Scented care products
• Granular exfoliating products
• Chemical exfoliation products
• Excessive sun exposure, without sun protection
• Hard cleaners or soaps
• Rough fabrics
