The history of hydroxyapatite
Sangi obtained a patent for dental materials from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Authority) in 1970. Because astronauts' teeth and bones lose minerals while in a weightless environment, NASA proposed a precursor of hydroxyapatite - a natural component of teeth - as a means of restoration.
On this occasion, the company Sangi in 1978 conceived and developed with its own innovative technology the idea of a toothpaste for enamel restoration with a component of hydroxyapatite and launched in 1980 the world's first toothpaste with hydroxyapatite APADENT.
In 1985 the APAGARD series was released which includes toothpastes and mouthwash with hydroxyapatite that have enhanced restorative and whitening action. In 1993, after many years of laboratory research and field testing, Sangi's only ingredient was officially designated "Medical hydroxyapatite" and is an active anti-caries agent by the Ministry of Health of Japan.
Sangi enamel restorative toothpastes today cover a wide range of products, while they have been widely used in Japan for about 40 years, for their against-caries and whitening properties.
