Children’s sunscreen: Which are the best?

Why should we use sunscreen?

Although we often associate the use of sunscreen exclusively with the summer months, it is a fact that we should use it all year round. This applies to both adults and adolescents, as well as children, since their skin is very sensitive and for this reason it needs specialized sunscreen care.

The use of sunscreen is important for children’s skin, even if they are not exposed to direct sunlight, but indirectly (under the beach umbrella or in a shady place). Choosing the right sunscreen for your child is important, so that their skin is safe all year around.

What does protection against UVA & UVB radiation mean?

There are 2 different types of solar radiation: UVA and UVB. UVA radiation is more associated with premature skin aging, while UVB is associated with skin burns. Children’s sunscreens, in their majority, protect against both these two types.

What does the SPF mean?

The SPF protection index depicts, mainly on a theoretical basis, how our sunscreen can protect us from UV radiation. Assuming your skin usually burns after being out for 30 minutes and have a sunscreen SPF 15 that you plan to use. You need to multiply 30 by 15. That means you are (theoretically) protected for 450 minutes or 7.5 hours. This pattern works in theory, as most sunscreens are not applied at the recommended time or in the right amount.

The number of UVB rays, you are protected from, also increases with SPF. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks 97%.

Why do children need specialized sunscreen?

The SPF index works in all sunscreens in the same way (whether they are aimed at adults or children). In addition, most of them contain similar ingredients.

The main thing about children’s sunscreens is that they have special compositions, which do not irritate the sensitive skin of children. Children’s sunscreens may have a nicer packaging, while many also have special pumps or applicators, so that they can be applied more easily and quickly.
