What are Lactobacillus bacteria?
Lactobacillus bacteria are a type of bacteria that colonize the intestine and coexist with humans every day. They are found in fermented foods such as milk, yogurt and cabbage and offer many health benefits. According to many studies, Lactobacillus bacteria inhibit the growth of several pathogenic bacteria which are drug-resistant, have anti-inflammatory properties and protect individuals with autoimmune diseases.
High salt consumption kills Lactobacillus
A recent study has shown that high salt intake is devastating for Lactobacillus bacteria in the intestine, while also triggers inflammatory reactions. Daily intake of 6 grams of salt in just 2 weeks, resulted in the elimination of Lactobacillus bacteria and caused inflammation. More research is needed to better understand how microflora and gut health affects the overall health and to which extent probiotics can provide useful treatments for diseases.
