If you are a fan of French medicated skin care, you have probably heard of thermal waters. Many French brands such as Avène, La Roche-Posay, Uriage and Vichy have products rich in thermal water, in spray form.

But do you know how to incorporate this French beauty secret into your skin care routine?

What is thermal water?

Thermal water is water that comes from hot springs. More specifically, the thermal water springs from rocks and on its way to the earth’s surface, is heated by geothermal activity and acquires valuable mineral components.

What does its composition contain?

Contains minerals and trace elements, such as chlorine, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which are considered beneficial for the skin! The composition of a particular formula depends on where the water comes from. For this reason, you should always consider its origin and composition before adding the product to your beauty routine.

How does it help the skin?

Thermal water is not just a way to cool off when the outside temperature is too high. Below we will look at some of the most important benefits of water.

1. Moisturizes the skin

Hydration is essential for the health and proper functioning of the skin. Even if you consume the recommended amount of water, our skin tends to lose its moisture. This phenomenon is called Transdermal Water Loss (TEWL) and is caused by the difference in osmotic pressure in the different layers of the skin compared to the environment. Although it is a normal process, there are ways to prevent TEWL.

Some research suggests applying thermal water to the skin, as it gives it a softer, more elastic and comfortable feeling. [1] It also helps to strengthen the skin barrier and thus reduce TEWL.

2. Protects against sun damage

Exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation leads to severe skin damage, as well as premature aging of the skin.

The minerals contained in the thermal water appear to have antioxidant properties, capable of neutralizing free radicals and reducing the risk of sunburn. [2]

Applying water 15 minutes before sun exposure increases the activity of catalase, an enzyme that protects cells from UV rays.

3. Soothes the skin

It is commonly used for many conditions related to inflammation, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema), thanks to its healing properties. [3]

Enriched with selenium, known for its antioxidant properties, it helps to immediately soothe the skin and relieve any irritation. Therefore, it is ideal for people with sensitive and fragile skin.

4. Balances the microbiome

A 2018 study proved that water from natural sources helps balance the skin microbiome. [4]

The skin microbiome covers every surface of the body and protects us from environmental attacks. It forms a fragile network of interdependent living bacteria. When the skin is inflamed and itchy, it means that the balance of the microbiome has been disturbed.

Can it be used on oily and acne prone skin?

It is safe for all ages and all skin types. People with oily and acne prone skin can benefit from using the thermal water due to its soothing properties, as it minimizes the redness and irritation that is often associated with acne.

How is it used?

Some of the many ways in which you can apply thermal water to your skin:

  1. Spray it as soon as you wake up in the morning, to instantly rejuvenate the skin.
  2. Apply it to the eye area, as it helps to treat puffiness in the eyes.
  3. Use it as a toner, after cleansing the face.
  4. Choose it as a make-up stabilizing spray.
  5. Spray on your face throughout the day for extra hydration and protection.
  6. Use it after waxing to minimize redness and irritation.
  7. In the evening, after removing makeup, apply a small amount to balance the pH of the skin.
