Apple cider vinegar derives from the fermentation of apple juice and is used as a natural remedy in many health conditions, such as eczema. But how effective and safe is its use?

What is eczema?

Eczema, or otherwise known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory dermatopathy characterized by remissions and exacerbations. Εczema is the result of atopic dermatitis and is characterized by dryness, itching and redness. It is a particularly troublesome condition that greatly affects the quality of life of individuals.

What is apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is a natural product resulting from the fermentation of apple juice sugars after the addition of microorganisms (bacteria). It contains alcohol and acetic acid, substances that give it a strong smell and a special flavor. Due to its acidity, it is believed to help with the treatment of eczema, affecting the pH of the skin as well as the risk of infections.

Apple cider vinegar and eczema

So far, there is no cure for atopic dermatitis and eczema, except for creams and treatments that aim to reduce the intensity and frequency of symptoms.

Acidity and bacterial infections

Although there are no studies to support the effectiveness of apple cider, it has been found that cider vinegar balances the acidity of the skin, improves the symptoms and prevents bacterial skin infections. This action is attributed to the acidity of the vinegar that helps maintain the pH of the epidermis. Instead, alkaline or basic creams and soaps seem to irritate the skin and exacerbate eczema.

Managing inflammation and infection

There is evidence which supports that apple cider vinegar also has anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce the chances of microbial infections. Application to the skin can reduce the edema surrounding the eczema, prevent the skin from “breaking” and help improve symptoms.

How to use it

It is recommended to add 2 cups of apple cider in warm water and bath for 15 minutes. Then rinse with cool water. For smaller areas, it is recommended to add 1 tablespoon of apple cider in 1 cup of warm water and then to apply to the skin around eczema with pure cotton or gauze.

Is it safe to use apple cider for eczema?

Apple vinegar is extremely acidic, which can benefit health as well as the exacerbation of various skin conditions. However, in some cases and when used to an excessive extent, vinegar can damage the body causing chemical burns. It is important to use small, diluted amounts of vinegar and carefully check the skin for any reactions or burning.

Is it safe for infants?

There are no guidelines or studies showing that apple cider is safe for infants or children. Using it can cause chemical burns and damage the sensitive skin of the infant, therefore it should be avoided.
