Female sensitive area health, and especially vagina health, is a situation that concerns women of all ages, as microorganisms often settle in this area and cause unpleasant symptoms and infections.

A very common symptom is vaginal dryness, which can be caused by a number of factors. The main causes are:

  • Menopause
  • Anxiety
  • Treatment for health issus
  • Infection

Vaginal dryness is a hallmark sign of menopausal genitourinary syndrome, also known as atrophic vaginitis or vaginal atrophy. With this condition, the vaginal tissues become thinner and more easily irritated.

This condition is the result of the body’s natural decline in estrogen levels during menopause. (1)

Suppose a woman is facing such a situation and needs treatment. The gynecologist will determine the appropriate treatment for the immediate relief and treatment of the symptoms.

One type of treatment he may recommend is vaginal cream, which we will discuss in this article.

Vaginal cream: what is it?

Vaginal cream is a type of treatment, which is applied inside the vagina with special applicators. There are plenty vaginal creams recommended by the doctor depending on the case.

It is very important to apply it correctly because otherwise it may not provide the optimal therapeutic effect. (2)

Where is it used?

Depending on the situation, it is recommended to relieve:

  • itching
  • heartburn
  • dryness
  • inflammation
  • painful intercourse due to vaginal atrophy

In addition, there are creams that regulate and restore vaginal pH, which protects the normal flora of the vagina while moisturizing.

What kinds of vaginal creams are there?

According to the diagnosis, vaginal creams are divided into the following categories:

  • Antifungal vaginal cream

It is indicated for the relief of the symptoms of vaginal mycosis, such as candidiasis. It can be combined with a cleansing liquid for the sensitive area, specially designed to prevent fungal vaginal infections, which relieves itching, burning, pain and irritation.

  • Vaginal cream for bacterial vaginitis

It is indicated to create a protective film on the vaginal mucosa, preventing the attachment of harmful microorganisms and bacteria, while in addition it contributes to the restoration of the vaginal flora and relieves secretions, irritations, itching and strong odor.

For this particular health condition, the doctor is likely to recommend an antibiotic vaginal cream.

  • Vaginal cream for atrophy

When estrogen levels drop, as occurs during menopause, vaginal atrophy is likely to occur. The tissue of the vaginal wall thins, dries out and can be inflamed, which may cause vaginal itching, burning, dryness and pain during intercourse.

Vaginal cream is often indicated for the treatment of symptoms that occur in women after menopause. It is used as vaginal moisturizer, ideal for the dryness that occurs this period, while it heals the damaged tissue. Thus, it restores moistour and contributes to the restoration of the vaginal flora.

For this particular health condition, it is likely the doctor will recommend a vaginal estrogen cream, such as e.g. estradiol, the main estrogen hormone involved in maintaining the reproductive system.

  • Vaginal cream for cervicitis

This is a more specialized treatment, which can only be applied after a doctor’s order and is indicated for cervical lesions and unclear cervical smears. It has the ability to bind pathogens and inhibit their spread.

How to put vaginal cream?

The application of the vaginal cream is an important procedure and needs attention, on the one hand for the vagina hygiene and on the other hand to achieve the desired result.

First, find a comfortable place where you can lie down while applying the cream, ideally with your knees drawn towards you. Your bed may be a good choice, although you may want to place a towel to catch any spills.

Wash your hands with soap and water before and after application. In general, almost all products on the market contain detailed instructions for use in the enclosed leaflet.

If you are pregnant do not place the applicator beyond the point where you feel resistance and generally make gentle movements.

Cleaning the applicator

Most vaginal creams contain disposable applicators, so you don’t need to clean the applicator but throw it away.

Reusable applicators should be cleaned by removing the plunger from the tube and washing with mild soap and warm water. Wipe it off and let it air dry. You can assemble it for storage once it dries.

Never boil your reusable applicator or use extremely hot water as this can melt or wear down the plastic.

If you are using a yeast infection cream, then you should discard the applicator once you have finished your treatment as the used applicator is likely to carry yeast, bacteria and other microorganisms in case you reuse it in the future. (2)

Vaginal cream: side effects

Usually vaginal creams do not cause side effects. However, burning, stinging, swelling, irritation, redness, pimple-like bumps, tenderness or peeling of the treated skin are likely to occur.

If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor immediately. (3)
