Information - Vitamin E

What is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, which acts as an antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from the action of free radicals. The name of the vitamin comes from the Greek words "tokos" (birth, creation) and "fero", because its lack has been associated with problems in fertility.

Acts synergistically with selenium and vitamin C.

There are natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E. Natural d-alpha tocopherol and the mixture of natural tocopherols α, β, γ δ are the natural forms and approach the vitamin E found naturally in foods. In addition they are more bioavailable and absorbable. The synthetic form of vitamin E is dl-alpha-tocopherol.

In most dietary supplements vitamin E is in its fat-soluble form, but there is also a water-soluble form available for people who have difficulty absorbing fat.

Health benefits

  • Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress.*
  • Taking 400 IU of vitamin E reduces the cardiovascular risk in patients who have already had an ischemic attack, and in postmenopausal women. Vitamin E is used to treat and prevent cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and high blood pressure, but also for cholesterol.
  • Vitamin E is one of the most important ingredients for the health and beauty of the skin. It has a strong antioxidant effect and fights free radicals that accelerate the aging process and photoaging. At the same time, it moisturizes the skin and keeps it soft, protecting it from dryness.
  • It has been shown in studies to boost the immune response and protect against upper respiratory tract infections, especially in the elderly.
  • Additionally, it can relieve the symptoms of PMS, such as pain, irritability and mood swings.
  • Studies confirm its action in the treatment of hair loss and in general hair health.

Which foods are rich in it?

Foods high in vitamin E are seed oils, nuts (almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds), avocados and sweet potatoes.

Vitamin E deficiency

Its deficiency is quite rare:
  • In children it causes liver, neurological, ophthalmic problems, developmental delay.
  • In adults it can cause mild hemolytic anemia, neurological problems, muscle problems, eye problems (cataracts), reproductive problems and infertility.

Recommended Daily Intake (RDA)

It is recommended to take 400-800 IU daily of vitamin E for adults, while the upper limit of upper tolerable intake level (UL) is 1500 IU.

For children the recommended daily intake of the vitamin is 15 IU while for pregnant and lactating women 22 IU and 28 IU respectively. Vitamin E is best taken after a meal containing fat.

It is worth noting that the soft capsules with Vitamin E are often recommended to be "broken" and the contained oil spread on the face. Of course, there are also products with pure liquid Vitamin E intended for use exclusively on the face.

Precautions, interactions and side effects

People taking anticoagulants or suffering from iron deficiency anemia and hyperthyroidism should avoid taking a vitamin E supplement. Diabetics should take the vitamin only under medical supervision. Liquid paraffin and contraceptives reduce its absorption.

High intakes of nutrients such as copper, iron and zinc reduce its levels. Taking during pregnancy and breastfeeding is safe with medical supervision.

At high doses of Vitamin E (above 1200 IU) fatigue, nausea, palpitations and high blood pressure may occur. These symptoms are completely reversible.
