Information - Sunscreens

Most of us wear sunscreen during the summer months to avoid sunburn and possible skin damage, but sunscreen should be a precautionary measure all year round.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends the use of sunscreen with an SPF30 or higher.

4 reasons why applying sunscreen should become a daily habit:

  1. Protects the skin from UV rays: In recent years the depletion of the ozone layer has led to an increase in UVB rays reaching the ground. UVB rays damage the outer layers of the skin and can cause serious skin conditions, while causing premature aging. A sunscreen with a high SPF will be more effective in absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  2. Prevents premature aging of the skin: Photoaging is due to repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation, from the sun or artificial sources, such as the solarium. The application of sunscreen on a daily basis and not only in periods of excessive sun exposure, is the best anti-wrinkle cream. Recent studies have shown that people over the age of 55 who regularly apply sunscreen are less likely (24%) to show signs of premature aging.
  3. Helps maintain the uniformity of color tone: Sunscreen helps prevent skin discoloration, a condition in which some areas are lighter or darker than the rest of the skin.
  4. Protects all skin types and tones: Some people believe that dark skin does not need sun protection. Even if sunburn does not occur, the skin is still prone to skin damage. Although serious skin conditions are more likely to occur on light skin, dark-skinned ones may be affected.
