Glutathione is a tripeptide, consisting of three amino acids, cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It is found and made in every cell of the body, but occurs in higher concentrations in the heart, muscle tissue and liver.
It forms glutathione peroxidase, which is the cell's intracellular antioxidant defense against free oxygen radicals. It keeps the antioxidant vitamins C and E intact and regulates the nitric oxide cycle. At the same time, glutathione neutralizes the action of heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium. It is also thought to transport nutrients to lymphocytes and phagocytes, which are the body's main defense cells.
