Sambucus is a herb that traditionally has been used from many cultures to treat viral infections, especially of the upper respiratory systems and to treat skin wounds. It is one of the most widely used plants in the field of medicines.

 

What is the sambucus

Sabucus is a plants with many names. It is also called Elderberries, while its scientific name is Sabmucus nigra or else Black Elder. In Greece it is known such as Koufoxylia, Afroxylia but also as Zamboukos. Sambucus is a deciduous tree with little yellowish – white flowers. The flowering period is Spring. The fruits of sambucus are little black colored berries.

 

Nutritional value

Rich in nutrients, sambucus has many flavonoids, even more than berries, cranberries and goji berries. It contains antioxidant vitamins A and C while also vitamins of B complex. Additionally it is rich in amino acids, carotenoids and tannins.

Actions and properties

The main and most known property of the sambucus is to treat symptoms of cold and flu. It has been studied many times for its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antimicrobial properties, making it the primary herb for boosting the immune system. Taking elder in the early days of colds and flu, it will help recover faster, boost immune system and reduce symptoms. It also helps treat sinusitis and reduce congestion of the respiratory system. A common effect of taking sambucus is increased sweating. It can be combined with antibiotic treatment.

 

Antioxidant action

Thanks to its antioxidant vitamins and flavonoids, it has strong antioxidant effects, as it neutralizes free radicals. In addition, elder protects other anioxidant molecules from being oxidized, such as linoleic acid and β-carotene.

 

Effects on the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts

Elderberry was found to have diuretic and laxative properties. Thanks to aforementioned actions, elder helps treat edema, constipation and renal congestion. Precaution is needed when it is taken along with diuretics and laxative.

 

Skin

Flowers of elder have traditionally been used to fade skin fads and spots while also as a skin softener. Their use is especially beneficial in cases of skin dryness and sunburns.

 

Contraindications and side effects

Fruits of elder contain chemical compounds of similar toxicity to cyanide, thus should not be eaten raw. Pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as people with diabetes, autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus) or people taking diuretics and laxatives should not receive supplements with elderberry.

Forms of sambucus and dose

Elder can be found in syrups and candies while also elder’s flowers can be used as tea. The therapeutic dose ranges from 250 to 500 mg.
