  Oregano oil is a natural oil that is produced through distillation process from oregano herb. Oregano belongs to the Lamiaceae family. In Greece the most popular specie is the Origanum vulgare. Oregano oil is used for centuries for medical and culinary reasons. In culinary the main specie is Origanum Marjoram, end the therapeutic one is Origanum vulgare.

   Oregano and especially its Mediterranean and wild species are very rich in natural antioxidants. The Greek oregano is a herb of very high quality. Main ingredients of oregano oil are carvacrol and thymol. Also contains terpens, rosmarinic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, boron, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin B3.

Oregano oil properties

   Oregano oil has important antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Creates a non friendly environment to bacteria, viruses and fungus, without disrupting natural beneficial microflora, as antibacterial and antimicrobial drugs do. Oregano oil has a great range of therapeutic indications.

Can be used in health concerns such as:

  • Urinary tract infections from E. coli, Proteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections from Staphylococcus aureus or flu virus.
  • Commoncold, faryngitis, laryngitis.
  • Candida infections
  • Parasitesinfections
  • Peptic ulcer form H. pylori
  • Gastroenteritis for rotavirus.

   Also oregano oil can prevent food poisoning from bacteria such as salmonella, η E. coli, and Shigella dysenteria. Oregano oil has a great antioxidant action, and protects body cells from free radicals and ageing. Recent studies have shown also a cardio-protective action of oregano oil.

   Oregano oil is beneficial for the digestive system. Increases digestive enzymes excretion and absorption of nutrients and protects the stomach and the gut. Can be very helpful in conditions such as intestinal candida, intestinal parasites, irritable bowel disease and spastic colitis. Recent studies have shown that one of the oregano oil’s ingredient the beta cariofillin can be helpful in osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, inflammation reduction and confrontation of chronic fatigue syndrome and muscle pain.

Oregano oil use

   Oregano oil is an essential oil that is considered as GRAS. Use one drop in water, tea, juice or olive oil, twice daily. As a food supplement, oregano oil is available in capsules and liquid. Recommended use is 100-150 mg of extract that contains at least 85% carvacrol and thymol. Oregano oil essential oil must be diluted before its application on the skin, because can cause irritation.
