Molasses, a sweetener of high nutritional value

    Molasses is a natural ingredient that is derived from sugar beets processing. It is a viscous syrup that has a bitter taste, a distinctive aroma and a dark color.

  It is considered a healthy natural sweetener that can be used instead of sugar in confectionery and cookery recipes (e.g. sauces). Despite its sweetness, molasses has a moderate glycemic index compared with honey and sugar, making it an good option for people who want to regulate better their blood sugar without limiting sweet flavor.

  Due to fewer processing, molasses retains its high nutritional value. It is rich in trace elements and essential minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper and contains a significant concentration of polyphenols and antioxidant compounds in comparison with other sweeteners. Compared to honey molasses is richer in iron and vitamins of B complex.

  It consists mainly of simple sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose and does not contain protein, fat or dietary fibers. One tablespoon of molasses (20gr.) provides about 60kcal.

  Because of high nutritional value molasses is ideal for boosting immune system while supplies body with energy. It is ideal for women during pregnancy, lactation or menopause, for children as well as for people who has high needs of iron and calcium intake. There is evidence which support that molasses consumption helps in situations like constipation, anemia and in bone health.
