What is bilberry?

Bilberry is a plant of the Vaccinium family that grows in conifer forests of Northern Europe, America and Asia.

   The fruits and leaves are used for therapeutic reasons. The fruits are rich in phenolic compounds such as quercentin, catechins, tannins, phenolic acid, anthocyanidines, vitamins A,C,E, beta-carotene, trace elements, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and pectins. Myrtile is an excellent antioxidant, and 100 grams of fresh fruit contain 300-700 mg of catechins, 3 mg of quercentin, and 3 mg of vitamin C.

   Except for its antioxidant action, has many other health properties. Anthocyanidines are water soluble flavonoids that givethe pink, red, blue and purple color in fruits. Also are compounds that are part of cellular renew, and DNA chain repair.

  7. Diabetes. Glycosides of myrtile leafs regulate blood glucose levels.
  8. Radiant skinAs an antioxidant retains skin elasticity and radiance, and increase collagen and elastin production.
  9. Vision support. Experiments in animals have shown that the consumption of myrtiles improves the night vision and reduces the possibility of macular degeneration.
  10. Cooking. Myrtiles can be consumes in pastries, in ice creams, jams and smoothies.
