Vitamin D and obesity

Παρασκευή, 17 Φεβρουαρίου 2017 13:57 Συντάκτης:

Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus metabolism as well as for healthy bones. Can be found in foods such as fish, cod liver oil, eggs, enriched milk and celeals. Thus dietary intake is not enough because vitamin D is synthesized by skin exposure to sun.

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, and also recent studies show that it is linked to a healthy weight too. Overweight and obese individuals with body mass index (BMI) greater than 23 and 35 respectively have a lack of serum vitamin D more often, compared to normal weight ones. For every increment of 1 BMI unit, serum vitamin D levels are lowered by 1.15%.

These findings show that obesity reduction can increase vitamin D levels in the body. The supplementation of vitamin D in obese individuals, in combination with a balanced diet and physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily can maximise weight, fat and waist to hip ratio loss.

The exact mechanism of the link between obesity and vitamin D levels is not known. It is believed that obese individuals store more vitamin D in their fat mass, thus there is not enough circulation of the vitamin in the blood flow for covering the body's needs. Also usually overweght and obese individuals are less exposed to the sun and consume less vitamin D rich foods.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for overweight and obese. D3 form is required in a minimum dosage of 1000 IU daily.
