Vitamin C is probably the most well-known vitamin and the first one that comes in mind as soon as we caught a cold or we feel the flu coming! It is synonymous with immune enhancement and the reason we supply with oranges, mandarins, pomegranates and other citrus fruits when we want to stimulate our system. But besides its contribution to the immune system and a better health, did you know she plays a key role for a beautiful and healthy skin?

A few words about our skin!

The basic function of our skin is to protect us from various external factors, acting as a barrier to environmental attacks. Everyday our skin is exposed to air pollution, solar radiation, and the so-called blue radiation, which comes from the computer screen, mobile and television. So it must be equipped with all the elements that will help it to cope with these daily challenges!

In general, our skin consists of two layers: epidermis, which is the highest level – the one that first interacts with the outside world and provides the barrier function, and dermis, the lower level, that lies just below the skin and supplies it with nutrients (1). In the latter there is a higher concentration of vitamin C compared to the epidermis

Vitamin C: where does it help?

Environmental attacks on which our skin is exposed daily, result in a reduction in vitamin C levels in the skin and in causing various lesions such as rough texture and appearance changes, as well as a reduction in elasticity and luster. As a consequence, lines and wrinkles make their appearance! How can vitamin C help us in this?

Powerful Antioxidant. The most well-known antioxidant, Vitamin C protects our cells from free radicals that can be a result of smoking, cloud exposure, UV radiation, and so on. This reduces skin lesions and wrinkles.

Synthesis of collagen. Vitamin C contributes decisively to the synthesis of collagen and connective tissue. Additionally, it helps the proliferation of fibroblasts, cells that produce collagen, a function that decreases over time. This is why, as we grow older, we feel our skin to break. When we take vitamin C, we give our body the first material to synthesize collagen, resulting in retaining skin elasticity and preventing skin loose.

Protection from photoaging.

Exposure to UVA and UVB radiation affects greatly the quality of the skin. Depending on the intensity and duration of exposure to them, the hydrolipid film begins to deteriorate, causing a thicker dehydrated skin. In addition wrinkles, as long as skin loose become more noticeable. At the same time, dyschromias and hyperkeratosis can be created. Vitamin C intake reduces the loss of moisture in the skin, so skin maintains a healthy appearance and prevents wrinkles.
