Ultraviolet radiation

Ultraviolet radiation is classified into two main categories, UVA and UVB radiation. UVA radiation has less energy than UVB. They penetrate in the deeper layers of the epidermis and are the main responsible for the appearance of wrinkles, due to the cumulative effects of photoaging on the skin, as well as for many cases of cancers.

UVB radiation affects only the upper layers of the skin and has much more energy than UVA. It is responsible for the production of melanin and tan, surface wrinkles as well as burns and skin cancer.

What is photoaging?

It is a cumulative skin damage caused by the sun (UVA and UVB). The lesions concern cell destruction, destruction of elastin and collagen of the epidermis and the appearance of spider veins due to increased oxidative stress. In addition, photoaging causes damages to melanocytic function, resulting in dark spots. The skin becomes dry and dehydrated with wrinkles, black spots and spider veins.

Anti-aging and sunscreen

Sunscreens are filters that prevent ultraviolet radiation from penetrating the skin, protecting it from its harmful effects. The choice of the appropriate sunscreen should be based on the type of skin, the age and the time of year. The sunscreen must have a wide range of protection against ultraviolet radiation, be waterproof and photostable.
