Which foods contain arginine?

L-arginine is an amino acid found naturally in our body but also in a low amount in a variety of foods such as dairy products, meats, fish, eggs and nuts. For many years, L-arginine has been released as a dietary supplement, a form most people know it.

What arginine is used for?

Like many other amino acids, L-arginine plays an important role in the synthesis of proteins, which in turn help build muscle and repair damaged muscle tissue (1). This is why it is quite popular with athletes but also bodybuilders.

At the same time, L-arginine releases nitric acid in the blood. This essence is absolutely essential to confront erectile dysfunction. This is because it relaxes penis muscles, so that blood flows easily into the blood vessels. The amount of blood may besix times up, thus overcoming the problem of erectile dysfunction.

Also, nitric acid enhances the ability our body to remove easily the lactic acid that produced during intense exercise. So we often find it in the everyday routine of people who are into sports.

L Arginine and libido

L-arginine appears to improve sexual function and is often used to treat erectile dysfunction. In a British Journal of Urology issue in 1999, a research was published according to which the administration of 5g of L-arginine per day for six weeks improved sexual function of men with erectile dysfunction (2). Since then, many research has confirmed these findings.

Arginine and for women?

L-arginine seems to help women too. A 2002 study find positive results in postmenopausal women with sexual disorders (3). The result was a significant increase in erotic stimulation, making L-arginine the ideal supplement for both men and women.

Other advantages

In addition to the positive effect on libido, L arginine has many other positive effects on the body. As it increases blood circulation throughout the body, it strengthens immune system and contributes to rapid wound healing. It also improves blood flow and helps reduce blood pressure. Also positive are the effects of L-arginine in people with diabetes, as it seems to improve sugar control and stimulate β-pancreatic cells to produce insulin (3)._

How much arginine do I need to take?

The recommended dose of L-arginine is not yet established, as our body produces enough. If you take it as a supplement a dose of 1200mg seemes to help (4). For bigger dose you need the supervision of a doctor.

Arginine – Side Effects

Some of the side effects that may arise from taking L- arginine are hypotension, swelling, abdominal pain, diarrhea or worsening of asthma and herpes. In addition, it can interact negatively with a particular class of drugs such as Viagra and antihypertensives (5).
