Flatulence is the excessive presence of gases in the intestine or/and stomach. It is not a disease, but a common gastrointestinal disorder that occupies a lot of people.

Symptoms of flatulence

The most common symptoms of flatulence are swollen belly, discomfort, increased numbness, nausea and excretion of gas from the intestine. The above symptoms may be accompanied by severe abdominal pain and cramps, which significantly deteriorate the quality of life of individuals.

Why is flatulence happening?

Accumulation of gases in the intestine is not due to pathological causes. It can occur for a variety of reasons, such as increased air intake during chewing or increased gas production after consumption of indigestible food. Flatulence and discomfort are even more common in those suffering from constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.

How are gasses produced in the intestine?

Normally, the food we consume is digested and absorbed gradually while it passes through the intestinal tract. However, there are substances that can not be digested from the small intestine, so they are digested directly into the colon by local bacterias.

Intestinal microflora is a group of friendly bacteria that colonize our gut. Bacterias are responsible for the breakdown and digestion of several types of food, such as soluble fibers, raffinose, sorbitol e.t.c..  As a result of bacterial metabolism, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane, are produced.

Which foods are responsible for gas production?

Food that may cause flatulence and gas production are:

  • Legumes (lentils, beans)
  • Vegetables with raffinose (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, etc.)
  • Foods with fructose, sorbitol and soluble fibers (pear, apples, plums, onions, carbonated beverages, soft drinks, etc.)
  • Lactose (dairy and cheese products)
  • Foods rich in starch (peas, corn, pasta, potatoes etc.)
  • Certain sweeteners such as sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol
  • Whole grain cereals and oats

Dealing with flatulence

The treatment of flatulence is mainly mediated through lifestyle and nutrition, while some dietary supplements may be useful.

Diet and lifestyle

One main cause of flatulence is excessive air in the stomach and/or intestines, as fast and nervous eating leads to air swallowing and pain. Food should be well and slowly chewed.

Regarding the type of food, each person has a different sensitivity. However, the food mentioned above are the primarily responsible for the production of gases in the gut, and therefore their quantity or frequency of consumption should be limited. In addition, it is recommended to reduce the intake of carbonated beverages and alcohol.

Food supplements

Vegetable carbon

Vegetable charcoal is a natural substance with absorbent properties, which is not absorbed by the body and passes the intestinal tract intact. It is also referred to as activated carbon and has the property of absorbing gases, toxins and bacterias in its molecule. It is also used in cases of diarrhea and detoxification.

Simethicone

A substance with anti-foaming action that destroys the air bubbles in the intestine and helps reduce symptoms and relieve flatulence. It is combined and administered in combination with vegetable carbon, as they have a synergistic action.

Ginger

The active ingredient of ginger is gingerol. It is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, as it helps reduce nausea, bloating and flatulence.
