If you belong in the category that your bones, knees and every locking joint have started to pain, then probably the inflammation found you too!

Generally, inflammation is not always worrying as it is a natural defense mechanism against various threats such as an infection, toxic substances or stress. But if the immune system starts reacting excessively, the inflammation can turn into an enemy!

This is often seen in joints; where inflammation can have serious effects such as rheumatoid arthritis. How can Boswellia herb help us deal with the inflammations and the pains they cause?

Boswellia: what is it?

Boswellia or Indian Frankincense is the extract from Boswellia serrata tree. The resin from the boswellia extract has been used for centuries in Asia and Africa to deal with chronic inflammation and other health conditions. Now, we can easily find it, as it is available as a dietary supplement, but also as a key ingredient in anti-inflammatory creams.

Where is it used?

According to the results of various researches boswellia may be useful in the following cases:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Asthma

Boswellia works due to its boswellic acids, which prevent the formation of leukotrienes in the body. Leukotrienes are those molecules that cause inflammation and have been found to trigger asthma symptoms.

Boswellia and osteoarthritis

The first step to tackling osteoarthritis is to reduce pain and inflammation. Boswellia serrata will help us in this direction. Individuals in a clinical study who received 100mg of Boswellia daily for three months said the pain began to decrease and their flexion improved compared to those who received placebo.

Boswellia and rheumatoid arthritis

Boswellia, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, helps reduce joint pain, swelling and stiffness, common complications in rheumatoid arthritis. This helps to improve movement, strength and leads to better joint health.

A research published in the Journal of Rheumatology showed that Boswellia significantly reduced swelling in the joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Boswellia and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Boswellia’s anti-inflammatory properties can also help in inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Indeed, in a study using an extract from Boswellia, the result was that Boswellia was not inferior to the drug mesalazine. That’s why its use is promising!

Boswellia and asthma

Boswellia, as mentioned above, reduces leukotrienes, which cause bronchial muscle constriction. A research published in the European Journal of Medical Research showed that patients with bronchial asthma experienced a decrease in symptoms such as dyspnoea and episodes frequency.

Other studies have shown that Boswellia helps the body react to environmental allergenic factors. Also, taking 300mg of Boswellia three times a day improved lung capacity and reduced asthma symptoms in 70% of the participants.

So, if you suffer from pain, inflammation or asthma, Boswellia is an excellent natrural  choice, which will help your symptoms relieve and you return to your rhythms!
