6 + 1 Ways to relieve the sore throat

29/10/2018

A sore throat is one of the most common conditions during autumn and winter. The most common cause of a sore throat (pharyngitis) is a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu and signifies the presence of inflammation and infection.

A sore throat is a pretty unpleasant sensation as it causes pain or a scratchy sensation in the throat during swallowing or talking, sore and swollen glands, swollen and red tonsils or a runny nose. It mainly occurs due to a bacterial or viral upper respiratory tract infection (pharynx, larynx and tonsils). Other causes of soreness can be smoking, gastroesophageal reflux, continuous and intense talking, and reduced water intake.

Even if a sore throat subsides relatively quickly, there are some tips that can relieve pain and speed up recovery:

1) Use plenty of spices and herbs such as turmeric, oregano, cinnamon and eucalyptus. Rich in phytochemicals, they offer anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and soothing properties. Use them in tea or directly in the food.

2) Drink hot drinks such as mountain tea or chamomile. Rich in antioxidants, they help to soften the throat and relieve the feeling of dryness. Enhance your beverages with honey, clove, lemon, eucalyptus leaves and cinnamon for better decongestant and astringent properties.

3) Say no to alcohol and cigarette. In days of acute pain, it would be good to avoid bad habits as they irritate the throat and exacerbate the discomfort.

4) Drink plenty of water for hydration. Keeping the throat hydrated. Avoid the intense irritation and the itching feeling resulting from dehydration. If water consumption seems difficult, you may prefer hot tea.

5) Inhale steam. Maintain the necessary moisture in your space. In addition, you can inhale boiled water with eucalyptus leaves or extract that helps to relieve the upper respiratory tract.

6) Saline water. Old traditional recipe for wounds, abrasions and sore throat. It helps to reduce swelling in the neck area while creating an inhospitable environment for bacterial growth.

7) Pastilles and neck sprays. They contain substances with antimicrobial and antiseptic properties such as propolis extract and honey, which enhance the body’s local defense, soothe the throat, stimulate the production of saliva, facilitating swallowing.
