NADH the key to cellular energy production
NADH is a molecule that is abundant in cells and plays a crucial role in many cellular processes. Modern lifestyle requires energy, physical and spiritual wellness. What is the usefulness of NADH supplements and can they help in a better quality of life?

What is NADH
NADH is a form of NAD+ (nicotinamido-adenine-dinucleotide) linked to a molecule of hydrogen. It is one of the most important compounds of cells, as it participates in biochemical reactions regarding energy production (oxidative-reductive reactions).
NADH is a dinucleotide molecule, and it consists of 2 nucleotides joined together. The nucleotides contain adenine and nicotinamide, otherwise vitamin B3. Human body has the ability to produce NADH from niacin (vitamin B3). It normally responds to every cell of body, but there are no NADH sources through diet.
The molecule is very unstable and sensitive to light and oxygen, making it difficult to produce dietary supplements with activity and bioavailability.
Actions of NADH
NADH is a donor of hydrogen. As hydrogen reacts with cell oxygen, energy is produced in the form of ATP, the basic energy coin of cells. Glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation are among biochemichal reactions that produce energy.
Additionally, NADH acts as an antioxidant factor and protects other important molecules from oxidation, such as glutathione, vitamin C and E.
It activates dopamine production and appears to affect cognitive function, therefore it is believed to play a therapeutic role in neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Benefits and properties
Thanks to the NADH’s ability to participate in energy production, it has been found that supplementation helps to treat chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and chronic fatigue syndrome. More specifically, many pilot studies have found that NADH
- Helps to enhance mental status
- Stimulates body by increasing energy levels, especially in the elderly
- Reduces and helps in dealing with chronic fatigue
- Reduces mental and physical stress
- Increases concentration and cognitive status
- Provides antioxidant protection
- Helps to deal with the jet lag
- Enhance memory and neurve function in patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
- Helps athletes to produce more energy
- Has anxiolytic properties
Dose and undesirible effects
Usual dose is about 5-15 mg per day. There are no side effects from NADH supplementation. Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take NADH supplements.
In Vita4you you can find nutritional supplements with NADH.
