Epimedium Macun the natural aphrodisiac

25/05/2017

Epimedium macun is a plant that grows mainly in regions of Asia. Traditionally in Chinese medicine has been used to treat various conditions, such as osteoporosis and erectile dysfunction but in recent years it has been proven to be a natural aphrodisiac.

Epimedium macun has many names among them Horny goat weed or Yin yang Huo because of it’s action to be a natural tonic of female (yin) and male (yang) libido.

Action – Dosage

Horny goat weed is used in order to help erectile dysfunction and involuntary ejaculation while also stimulates libido of both men and women.
It’s action is due to icariin, a flavono-glucoside substance that acts on the reproductive organs, inhibiting the action of certain enzymes, mimicking the effect of testosterone and increasing tissue oxidation. It also causes increased blood circulation, thereby aiding the erection and blood supply of reproductive organs. The result is to improve sexual desire and libido, improving sexual performance and erotic satisfaction.

Epimedium Macun is a rich source of phytoestrogens thereby has been used to treat osteoporosis and reduce bone mass losses. The reason is that phytoestrogens mimic the action of female estrogen especially in postmenopausal women.

There is no recommended dosage but usually is 150 – 750mg per day.

Interactions and contraindications

Taking epimedium macun may increase heartbeat, causing cardiac arrhythmia or even aggravate an existing one. Due to the effect of icariin on blood circulation, it may also decrease blood pressure.

Supplements with Horny goat weed are contraindicated by people who take anti-hypertensive or anticoagulant treatment, antiplatelet drugs, have low blood pressure , cancer or estrogen-dependent conditions.
