Senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are very common mental disorders that affect not only memory and thinking but also the quality of life of individuals and their families.

  The incidence of mental disorders has been increased dramatically the last years. There are many similarities and differences among different types of dementia, so let’s have some myths debunked.

Does dementia and Alzheimer’s disease refer to the same thing?

Myth! Although daily we use the term dementia to describe impairment of cognitive function, however dementia is a rather than specific term. The have been found many types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common, especially among the people older than 60.

Is it normal the memory to decline with aging?

Truth! The memory and the mechanisms that govern it are one of the most complex fields of studing. Short and long term memory naturally decline with aging. In cases of a simple form of dementia or partial loss of memory, the quality of life remains almost unaffected, but in advanced situations, like late stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the individuals are no longer able to look after themselves.

Dementia cannot be prevented.

Myth! Although there is a natural decline in mental ability in older, there are many modifiable factors that can significantly reduce the occurrence of dementia. More important seem to be the cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking and hypercholesterolemia. Moreover, healthy eating and being physically and mentally active seem to protect against development of dementia or even to be developed in a milder form.
