Vitamin D and heart health

Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus metabolism as well as for healthy bones. Can be found in foods such as fish, cod liver oil, eggs, enriched milk and celeals. Thus dietary intake is not enough because vitamin D is synthesized by skin exposure to sun.

   Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, and also recent studies show that has protective properties to the cardiovascular system too. Low vitamin D serum levels are linked to increased risk of developing ischemic cardiomyopathy, heart attack and sudden cardiac death. As vitamin D levels are lowered, cardiovascular risk is more increased in proportions that vary from 40-80%.

   Also vitamin D metabolites are linked to atherosclerosis pathogenesis and inflammatory vascular diseases. Hypertention is worsen by low vitamin D levels in the body. In patients with cardiac insufficiency vitamin D intake can make the heart to work more properly.

   Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
