Nutritional supplements and pregnancy

06/02/2017

Pregnancy is a very special and important period for every woman. The main concern is the proper development of the fetus.

During the first trimester, if not at the time of conception, it is necessary to provide macronutrients and micronutrients, in order the fetus to be developed properly. This is due to many studies that have shown that poop nutrition has been linked with premature birth, low birth weight, neurological problems (problems of the spinal canal), preeclampsia and even perinatal death.

Recommendations

According to the American Dietetic Association and the Institute of Medicine all pregnant women who

  • smoke or used to smoke
  • follow vegetarian diets
  • have twins
  • do not have a balanced diet
  • suffer from iron deficiency anemia
  • suffer from a chronic disease

should take special daily nutritional supplements that provide all the necessary minerals and trace elements to the fetus. Ideally supplementation should start several months prior to conception.

Micronutrients

Iron

It is one of the most important minerals of the body and the main component of hemoglobin. Main activity is the transport of oxygen to tissues. In pregnancy, blood volume increases in order to feed and provide all the necessary elements to both mother and fetus. This results in doubling the body requirements in iron. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue, weakens the immune system, body becomes more prone to infections and increases the risk of premature birth and low infant birth weight.

RDA 60 mg

Folic acid

Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin of B complex. It is a necessary element for the development of the nervous system of the infant as well as for DNA synthesis. Folic acid deficiency leads to poor brain development, neural tube problems and increases the risk of perinatal death and premature birth.

RDA 400 mcg before pregnancy and 600 mcg during pregnancy

Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant and important minerals of the body. It is essential both for bone developement, teeth, circulatory system, muscle and nerve function.

RDA 1,000 mg

Vitamin D

One of the most important fat-soluble vitamins which is obtained either by diet or through supplements or it is synthesized naturally with solar radiation on the skin. Contributes to good bone development, laying the groundwork for a healthy immune system and according to several studies prevents the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and obesity.

RDA 200 IU (5mcg)

Essential fatty acids

Among the essential fatty acids are linoleic acid (omega-6) and linolenic acid (omega 3). They are necessary for the proper development of the brain, eyes and play a very important role in the formation of many hormones which are involved in the immune system and in inflammatory reactions.

RDA 200 mg of DHA

Herbs and herbal supplements
