Ηyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin with many beneficial roles. In cosmetology and pharmacology it is used in several situations regarding skin, health and beauty.

It is a hydrophilic component which is normally produced by human body. Mainly, it is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, andneural tissues, while it is involved in many body functions. The basic structure of the hyaluronic acid are two sugar molecules (disaccharide), glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-glucosamine, which are bond together and continuously repeated for a thousand times, thus creating hyaluronic acid.

Properties

Hyaluronic acid has the capacity to absorb large amount of water. Because of this property, hyaluronic acid gives the required humidity to the skin while also, increasing the amount of water in the other tissues. Another property is to carry protein molecules to the skin surface, thereby enhancing its resistance to external factors. It prevents the destruction of collagen and also favors the reconstruction of new collagen fibers.

As we are getting older, the production of hyaluronic acid, as well collagen and elastin respectively, is significantly reduced. As a result, skin gradually loses its shine and firmness and wrinkles appear.

In other tissues, such as joints and connective tissue, decreased production of hyaluronic acid leads to reduced lubrication, poor mobility and operability.

Forms

Studies indicate that hyaluronic acid is better absorbed and utilized by skin and joints when it’s molecular weight is large. In market there is a big variety of supplements either in tablets, capsules, drops or liquid beverages.

Action

Basic beneficial properties of hyaluronic acid’s supplements:

Thanks to its capacity to retain water, helps to moisturize skin while also to fill wrinkles. The most common application of hyaluronic acid is in anti-aging treatments.

Hyaluronanic acid also is involved in tissue repair, because it plays an important role in the normal epidermis and reepithelization process. There has been found that it helps in faster wound healing by helping to produce collagen and regenerate new cells. Thanks to the above property, it is also used to strengthen gums in cases of gingivitis and oral inflammation.
