Detoxification is a very important process for the proper functioning of body. Μagnesium sulfate, or commonly known as Epsom Salt, can detoxify body internally as a dietary supplement, and externally through bath. The name Epsom name has been given to magnesium sulfate because at first there were found in Epsom area in Surrey of England.

Magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt containing minerals like magnesium, sulfur and oxygen (MgSO4).

Indications

Epsom salts can be used in many different ways, both internally as an oral solution, and externally for bathroom. It is considered by many as one of the best means of detoxifying body and thus there have been used in many areas of medicine.Traditionally magnesium sulphate is used to treat conditions such as:

• malnutrition
• muscular fatigue
• constipation
• detoxification
• skin peeling
• acne
• muscle injuries or fatigue
• arthritis

Ιnternal use

The Epsom salt works as an excellent laxative when used as an oral solution, enhancing functioning of digestive tract (small and large intestine). Some of the situations that can benefit from using Epsom salts are:

• Nervosity
• Constipation
• Detoxifing toxins and body parasites
• Muscle relaxation
• Muscle pain

Way of action

Magnesium sulfate molecules can be easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and skin. Thanks to hyperyperosmotic properties of salt, it can attract large amounts of water in the intestine in order to be absorbed and utilized by the body. The result from the entrance of salt in the gastrointestinal tract is accompanied by large water input from the surrounding cells. This facilitates intestinal motility and promote the removal of toxins from both intestine and body. Thus, Epsom salt can be used to temporarily treat constipation, as it operates as an excellent laxative.

Another very essential property of the salt is the ability to balance electrolyte levels of body. The salt contains magnesium and sulfur molecules which are involved in many biochemical reactions of the body. Magnesium is one of the most important metals of body and is responsible for the proper muscle contractility, acid-base balance of the cells while also muscle and enzyme function as well. Because the salt is easily absorbed by the body, it has been used for the increase of magnesium levels in the blood (hypomagnesemia).

Helpful seems to be taking Epsom salt on cardiovascular disease and asthma. In medicine it has been used intravenously to treat cardiac arrhythmias and hypertensive episodes and as a bronchodilator in asthma exacerbations.

External use

If you want to detoxify your body easily and quickly you can take a bath with magnesium sulfate salt. Due to it’s high absorbability, it penetrates into the cells helping to reduce toxins, calms down the nervous system and relaxes muscles. It also works as an exfoliating agent as it removes dead skin cells, by leaving skin smooth and soft. Additionally, removes fungi and bacteria that grow on the skin, thus helping reduce feet odor.

Salt hydrates and detoxifies the skin, while also stimulates local microcirculation and lymph. Thanks to the high concentration of magnesium, it works as an excellent neuro- and muscle relaxant thus it can be used to muscle injuries, arthritis, persistent headaches and cramps. It can be dissolved in a bath or in a basin for a foot bath or it can be used as a paste in a towel with warm water for localized muscle pains.

Contraindications – side effects

Although no side effects have been reported, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid using Epsom salts. In addition people who suffering from chronic kidney disease, diabetes, obstructive bowel disease, colitis or severe stomach pain, nausea or vomiting should first consult their physician. Taking magnesium sulfate salt may increase intestinal gas, bloating and bowel movement.

How to use

Internally as a detoxifying treatment it can be used twice a year, in accordance with the advice of a physician or dietitian.
