Sports, coconut water and hydration!

Summer, hot weather and it is time to talk about proper hydration! And if all the first thing that comes to mind is cool water, the value of coconut water is to become a very good and healthy choice, especially for those who play sports.

   Coconut water is a very nutritious drink that not only hydrates but also supplies with nutrients and electrolytes the body. It is derived from green coconuts of Arecaceae family of plants, which grow mainly in tropical countries. Each coconut can give, depending on its size, up to 200ml to 1lt of water, while the fruit during water collection should be intact. Unlike water, common coconut milk derives from the flesh of the coconut, so it should not be confused.

Coconut water

   Coconut water is a clear liquid that has a sweet and slightly bitter taste, like the fruit of the coconut. The flavor may vary depending on the variety and the plant’s growth environment, because the taste is determined according to the nutrients of the subsoil (minerals, climate, etc.).

Nutritional value

   Coconut water consists of primarily water (> 95%), carbohydrates in the form of simple sugars (~ 4-5%), electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and sodium, and contains little fat (<1%). It has very few calories per serving (~ 19kcal / 100ml) and does not contain vitamins.

Sports drink

   Because of its electrolytes content, coconut water is considered as a very good sports drink. It is an isotonic solution, thereby satisfactorily replenish lost electrolytes after workout. Unlike common sports drinks, coconut water replenish lost fluids and electrolytes without offering unnecessary calories. In comparison, coconut water has fewer calories, less sodium and more potassium than fruit juices and sports drinks. Based on that fact, many scientific studies have shown that coconut water can hydrates athletes after exercise much more efficiently comparing to common sports drinks.

   Taking large amounts of fluids after training may often lead to gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea or intense feeling of fullness because of their sugar content. Coconut water, unlike sports drinks, creates far fewer gastrointestinal disorders in athletes, as several studies have indicated.

Cosmetic use

   Coconut water despite for a nutritious drink, is also an excellent skin cleanser and moisturizer. In India, where the coconut production is abundant, it is used as a face cleanser. It also helps fight acne, reduce greasiness of skin, while also provides hydration.

Hangover

   Large consumption of alcohol leads to dehydration and a strong sense of discomfort and headache, the next day. Coconut water thanks to the moisturizing properties, helps replenish lost electrolytes and particularly potassium levels. So, if you ever get drunk, you can drink a glass of coconut water in the evening before bed and / or in the morning when you wake up.

Cuisine

   Coconut water may additionally be used in both cooking and cocktails’ recipes. It reduces the calorie content of your drinks, while also provides a tropical sense to your taste.
