Which foods are rich in selenium?

Rich sources are fish and seafood, liver, red meat and poultry, various foods of plant origin, such as cereals, fruits, seeds and vegetables. In the first place are the Brazil nuts. One fruit provides about 95 μg of selenium, an amount that covers the recommended daily dose of selenium.

Lack: what causes it?

Selenium deficiency has been linked to thyroid problems, decreased immunity and irritability. Low levels of selenium have been linked to various health conditions such as hair loss, infertility, thyroid gland problems, heart problems (Keshan disease), joint disease, aging and more.

Recommended Daily Intake (RDA)

The recommended daily intake for adults is 55 μg. Co-administration of vitamins A, C and E is recommended. Overdose (> 400 μg) should be avoided.

Taking up to 70 μg daily during pregnancy and breastfeeding is safe with medical supervision.
